EVENTS
The events in Parga are a celebration of culture and tradition. "Varkarola" gathers bathers in the harbor, while the litany on August 6 celebrates the Day of the Transfiguration. Easter brings special splendor, with torchlight processions and the special taste of seasonal food. These events bring the community together in a festive atmosphere, bringing life and color to the daily lives of residents and visitors.

Varcarola on August 15

Parga is ready to give unique moments to the locals and thousands of visitors again this year, with the events it organizes on the fifteenth of August. The Parginas or Kanarias are events of both a religious and historical nature starting from the islet of Panagia, in front of the city of Parga. On August 15, the "barkarola" is revived, a custom which represents the return of the Parginians and the Holy Heirs to the now free city of Parga, since according to the history of the city, the inhabitants abandoned it when it was sold by the English to Ali Pasha in 1819. The ships arrive at the port where a crowd of people is waiting and hundreds of sparklers light up the sky.

Litany on August 6 of Panagiopoula

The celebration is always fixed on August 6, the day of the inauguration of the church of the same name founded in Tabor by Saint Helen, mother of Constantine the Great. At the Transfiguration of Christ, we celebrate an event in his life, which has the same significance for our salvation as his incarnation and resurrection. That is, as great and essential for our salvation is the feast of Christmas and Resurrection, so great and essential is the feast of the Transfiguration. That is why our Church placed it celebratory in the center of the period from Easter to Christmas. So that these three holidays - which are separated by approximately the same period of 4 months - dominate the annual calendar and constitute the main spiritual stations of the human soul. And because it is a great holiday, fasting is recommended before it, just like Christmas and Easter.
